About

Welcome to my website. Although the host is new, the blog is not--the first post went up in January 2008. I write about a variety of topics here including, but hardly limited to, baking, books, movies, historical topics, and politics. This is a catchall for a range of topics, particularly those that are not part of my research portfolio.

Felt I could use a little more vitamin c in my diet, so I made a lemon poppyseed cake. The hard part was getting it out of the Bundt pan.
This weirdo.
Bagelquest continues. I might need to try poking the hole because I’m not getting the two ends to bind as well as I’d like when I do a bulk proof in the fridge and then shape in the morning, and I don’t get the rise just right when I shape the night before. These adhered a little better than the last two batches, at least.
Recent reading:
Someone requested red wine velvet cupcakes out of the Bravetart cookbook for her birthday, but instead of the cream cheese frosting she asked for a European-style buttercream. Not a bad outcome: delicate, slightly spicy, slightly chocolate-y cake, loads of not-too-sweet vanilla buttercream, and topped with cocoa nibs.
New pies just dropped, using home-made ingredients and a haul from today’s farmer’s market.
